Application:

Exterior wall graphic installation on concrete athletic stadium

Solution: Mactac IMAGin® RoughRAP® and PERMACOLOR® RAYZor™

Project Summary:

When California University of Pennsylvania started a rebranding campaign, local large format digital printed and graphics installation company, 84 Sign Shop, knew it could really help the University make a unique impression. Having partnered on projects in the past, 84 Sign Shop and the University teamed up to create promotional graphics that would be creatively displayed on the University’s outdoor athletic stadium.

The idea was to install the graphics to the sides of the concrete stadium bleachers. Although 84 Sign Shop had never used Mactac® products before, after speaking with company representatives, reviewing the detailed product information and technical application guides, and testing Mactac’s products against competitor products, they felt confident they were moving in the right direction with Mactac.

The project was executed using Mactac’s IMAGin RoughRAP RR100 wall wrapping film and one of Mactac’s PERMACOLORRAYZor LF3600 series clear overlaminates, which are available in gloss or matte finishes. Mactac assured 84 Sign Shop that this dynamic product duo made rough and textured wall applications easy, while also promising superior protection from outdoor elements.

“This was our first time using Mactac material and after this experience, we will definitely be using more in the future,” says Mackenzie Smith, Installer for 84 Sign Shop. “Mactac’s material bit into the stadium concrete so it looked flawless. The install went smoothly, and we couldn’t get over how great the seams blended in – which was something we were initially nervous about.”

The graphics were printed on an HP Latex 360 wide-format printer. The installation was completed by two installers over the course of two days – each day beginning at a temperature of roughly 40°F and warming to nearly 70°F by late afternoon. The installers used heat roller combination tools from a bucket truck and a stand to adhere the printed graphics to the concrete.

Known for excellent conformability and a strong bond, RoughRAP is a 2.0-mil soft gloss white high-performance vinyl with an aggressive permanent adhesive. When used in conjunction with the 1.5-mil PERMACOLOR RAYZor overlaminate, outdoor durability of graphics is extended. Exterior RoughRAP/RAYZor combination graphics have an outdoor life expectancy of 18 months.

“The graphics focus attention on the stadium and build school spirit,” says athletic director Dr. Karen Hjerpe. “Our new logos capture the energy of our athletic teams and the personality of Cal U.”
