New Postage Stamps Are Something to Laugh About

MACtac® supplies pressure-sensitive adhesive label materials for Sunday Funnies comic strip stamps

Paying tribute to one of the most popular, lighthearted and well-read sections of the newspaper, the United States Postal Service (USPS) recently commemorated five newspaper comic strips through the introduction of its new Sunday Funnies stamps. MACtac® supplied the pressure-sensitive adhesive label materials for the 80 million, 44-cent First-Class stamps issued.

The stamps, which were dedicated at a ceremony at The Ohio State University, honor several classic comic strip characters, including Sgt. Orville Snorkel and Beetle, from Beetle Bailey; Calvin and Hobbes, from Calvin and Hobbes; Veronica, Archie and Betty from Archie; Garfield and Odie, from Garfield; and Dennis, from Dennis the Menace. The stamp images were selected by Ethel Kessler, art director, of Bethesda, Md.

“These newspaper comic strips are indeed enduring classics, and MACtac is proud to have played a role in honoring them through these commemorative stamps,” said Allison Hazel, marketing manager, MACtac Printing Products. “Supplying the adhesive gave us the opportunity to join in celebrating the comics that have brought so much laughter to American households for decades.”

In the Beetle Bailey stamp, lazy Private Beetle Bailey smiles at the agitated Sergeant Orville P. Snorkel while the Calvin and Hobbes stamp shows six-year-old Calvin and his tiger and friend, Hobbes, making scary but fun-loving faces. The Archie stamp provides a picture of American adolescence as the comic strip’s namesake shares a chocolate shake with Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper. Self-centered and cynical, Garfield is featured in the Garfield stamp, along with his friend Odie, a carefree, energetic dog, and the Dennis the Menace stamp depicts five-year-old Dennis, who is surely heading off to some new mischief.

There are five philatelic products available for the Sunday Funnies stamp issue. The stamps can be purchased online at www.usps.com/shop, by phone at 800-STAMP-24 (800.782.6724) and at local post offices.
